At Tirupati, in the extreme south of the state Andrapradesh,
lies the world famous shrine of lord Venkateswara Balaji. Tirumalai has seven
hills and so the Balaji is also known as Edukondalavadu,
the god of seven hills. Thousands of pilgrims congregate here to pray and seek
blessing of Sri Balaji every day. This shrine is one of the richest in the
country. Traditionally the pilgrims here get their heads shaved. The Tirumali
temple is about 22 kms from the town of Triupati and there are frequent buses
and taxis. The image of Balaji has the attributes of both Vishnu and Shiva. The temple with its soaring Gopurams and
gilded Vimana, is a fine example of Dravidian architecture.
How to get there
There are daily
flights to Tirupati from Hyderabad and
madras. The flight takes around 90 min from Hyderabad and Chennai. There are
regular buses from Chennai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. Renigunta is the nearest
railhead.

There are numerous Indian style hotels, rest houses,
